The opportunity arose when a training solution company Firtech approached us to explore the training of 40 previously disadvantaged students to become drone/RPASpilots. These students were being subsidized by the MICT SETA as part of black economic empowerment and job creation initiative.
The training to be offered was to provide our standard Remote Pilot License (RPL) course supplemented with extra tuition both on the theoretical and practical side to make up for a lack of student knowledge of drones or anything to do with aviation. The course was implemented with students being trained in batches of eight over a period of three months. This, unfortunately, got extended as a result of the implementation of extended COVID lockdown regulations. Given the disadvantaged backgrounds, many of our students came from, we were pleasantly surprised at the student’s rapid assimilation of the RPL subject matter, their dedication, and enthusiasm. The results so far are 31 students have passed and been accredited (77,5%), a few found jobs during the course and have decided not to continue and some failed the exams.
Ugan Maistry, CEO of Firtech commented, “Given the challenge of training young people who had little or no exposure to drones or aviation, DroneiT went out of their way to coach our students both in the theory and the practical side. This resulted in an exceptionally high pass rate. Given their passion for all things drones and training, I would not hesitate in recommending them for anyone contemplating getting an RPL, renewal or instructor rating.”Lessons learnt include the need for a pre-course that introduces students to the drone industry and all its aspects and applications. To this end we are far into the process of developing an online course. In addition, this has motivated us to create industry-specific training in the areas of mapping, videography, agriculture and mining to further equip new graduates to enter the job market
Perhaps this is best summed up by one of our students Thato’s comments: “It is with much enthusiasm that I am writing to recommend the services of DroneiT. I have completed the Remote Pilot License (RPL) course for becoming a drone pilot through DroneiT and am completely satisfied with their service. I had no prior experience of flying drones, but with the help of competent instructors, I can safely conduct aerial services. Not only did the company bring good expertise for the practical training, the theoretical sessions were also engaging and very informative. I’m happy to recommend the services of DroneiT.”
